4th graders are Cardinal Charter School studied the properties of matter and practiced their problem-solving skills in the process. We learned about creating models, buoyancy, and balance. We used the engineering design process to ask questions, plan, build, test, and improve our ideas. Our objective was to be able to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. The problem students were faced with was to imagine they were trapped on an island with nothing but apples and toothpicks, can you construct a floating raft that will help you sail home? Students were able to use the vocabulary words: model, density, buoyancy, weight, balance, and stability when describing the properties of matter involved in this activity and find solutions. Using science we learned to save ourselves!
